Penis Extender Devices – Why Silicone Noose Penis Extender Devices Are a Thing of the Past

Penis extender devices are one of the most popular enlargers out there for a good reason. They are an extremely consistent way to add inches to your member and do so in a relatively short time period. In just a few months you can be the man you never thought you could be! If you have started to consider the notion of getting a penis extender and have done your research, you have discovered there are two distinct variations of the device on the market today.

Clinical trials have proven the fantastic results that you can achieve however extenders have certainly evolved since they first hit the market. So what is the difference between these two types of penis extenders and which is the best choice for you? Lets look at the two types individually.

Penis Extender Devices – The Silicone Noose Variety

First lets look at the traditional penis extender. The base is just a large padded circle with the posts welded on (on lesser versions) or screwed on (on better versions). These posts are a set length and at the top is a “slider” which runs along the posts. This slider will have attached to it a small silicone loop that sits behind the crown of your member. All in all this is a very effective layout but it does have some major issues. Firstly this design does not allow for the extension of the runner rods to a longer length. This means that if you maximize the gains you are able to make with the device and you want to continue growing, then you have to buy a new device to keep growing larger. The base of the device is also not very comfortable when pressing against the pelvis. The most important drawback however is in the design of the loop or “noose”. The use of a silicone ring is outdated. Not only does it cut into the top and sides of the organ causing a massively uncomfortable feeling during use, but also it can hinder circulation to the head of the member. This is not only uncomfortable but also dangerous if the circulation is impeded for an extended period of time such as wearing the device overnight.

Penis Extender Devices – The Newer Better Way

Now lets look at the other version of the penis extender. This newer version is most commonly referred to as a “comfort strap” style. The best representation of this type of device is the SizeGenetics Extender. These newer versions are not only able to reduce the risk and discomfort associated with older extenders, but are significantly more effective. Firstly the base of these newer models is ergonomically designed to contour to the pelvic shape of a man’s anatomy. This means that as tension is applied and pressure on the base increases, you will not notice any discomfort.

You will also notice that with these newer designs that the runner rods are segmented. This serves two purposes – first it allows the device to be extended so that as you grow longer, so does the device. This means that you can keep growing as long as you want to, and get as big as you want to. Secondly this means that the whole device can be broken down for easier cleaning and storage. The most significant change you will notice between the older style and the newer one is the design of the “slider”. On the newer models the design of the slider is shaped more to the natural curvature of a grown man’s organ. You will notice that the loop or “noose” design has also been replaced with a more updated design using a comfort strap instead of the loop. This system is not only more comfortable than the previous version but is also more effective for making your penis larger and has less risk associated with its use.

So as you can see a lot has changed since the first devices hit the market! Why some men continue to use these cheaper, less effective and uncomfortable systems is a wonder. There are so many better alternatives on the market today and the results they deliver are far superior.

For Those Who Love Mobiles, Motorola’s Droid 2

Originally Motorola Droid was launched last year than it set the standard for Android-based QWERTY sliders. Like its predecessor, the Droid 2 has a solid QWERTY keyboard and a 3.7-inch LCD which makes the device more competitive relative to the latest Android offerings from other handset makers. The Droid 2 has a 1GHz OMAP 3630 processor, 512MB of RAM, and 8GB of internal storage.

Motorola provided its own software layer to the Android stack, which includes a custom home screen implementation, additional widgets, and several applications is extremely impressive. The phone feels absolutely solid in the hand, though the keyboard makes it a bit chunky. The raised keys are a modest improvement over the original keyboard. Typing on the Droid 2 is comfortable and relatively effortless. Despite the improvements, the Droid 2 keyboard still doesn’t rival that of HTC’s Touch Pro 2, a device that I still regard as the QWERTY king. During the first few days of use, phone calls depleted the battery much faster than expected, but that leveled out after one full recharge cycle. It now delivers all-day battery life under a relatively heavy load.

The only thing about the Droid 2 that we really feel compelled to complain about is the phone’s default ringtone. It seems petty to whine about something like that (especially since it’s very easy to change), but you have to hear it for yourself to truly appreciate its stomach-churning awfulness. When I picked up a Droid 2 mistakenly thought that the phone’s speaker was broken the first time I heard the ringtone, because it was inconceivable to me that a properly-functioning device would emit such a horrifying cacophony. There’s not much else to say about the Droid 2 because the basic hardware is so similar to its predecessor. The pairing of a solid QWERTY with a great messaging application will also make the Droid 2 an excellent choice for mobile productivity junkies.

Parenting Launch Sequence – Managing The Change Of Letting Go Of Children To Launch As Young Adults

Parents are told to give their children “roots and wings” from the time they are born until it is time to leave the nest, some twenty years later. I believe that the first part comes easier than the second, which may not come at all for some older adolescents these days. Let me explain a few factors to help you understand why some kids never seem to launch into early success as young adults.

Giving a child ‘roots’ is about shared traditions, values, personal accountability to a moral standard of behavior, such as the 10 commandments or the golden rule as well as providing a safe and loving home environment. I believe most parents do their best to care and provide for their kids. I also believe that most parents try to build these core values into the heart of their kids which will always show up through their behavior and choices later on in life. When a child clearly understands what they believe they are stronger and more focused to go through the teen years without getting hung up on the distractions and temptations that cause so many of their peers to stumble and fall.

Right from wrong is usually easy to spot

Frankly, I don’t think most parents really struggle with knowing what they should be doing, because they know what they want their children to learn and if you ask them, they usually have a pretty clear vision of how they want their children to behave. It’s been my experience that most parents do their best to give their kids the strength of being deeply rooted into a personal belief system of some kind, especially in understanding right from wrong and how to respond to the world around them in a reasonable and responsible way.

If they aren’t directly building these values into the lives of their kids, they are likely supplementing those values through regularly attending a house of faith or some other form of ethical values education (for instance, consider the great programs available through faith based groups like the YMCA), or even through targeted exposure to positive messages through the entertainment and media they let their kids experience. Giving kids traditional family values will root them into knowing what they believe, but it won’t always protect them when they are challenged by their peers as to why they believe it.

Common fights about the ‘flight plan’ between parents & older kids

So, how do you take a child that you have loved, cared for, taken care of and protected for their entire lifetime the right amount of space to ‘fly’ forward on their own wings? Let me warn you ahead of time, it’s often hard to find the right level of balance on this subject and kids and parents often experience their greatest conflict during the teen years trying to figure out just the right level of responsibility and independence for each stage of life!

Yet as hard as it may be for parents to even consider letting go of the children that they have invested so much time and energy into, it is essential for the child’s healthy development and inner strength as a person who will one day have to move out and move on as a young adult to tackle issues directly throughout their life without the security of knowing that mom and dad’s watchful care is always going to be near.

The goal is for them to know what they believe, and when tested, to pass the test and live out those beliefs in spite of the pressures around them.

Dangerous truth- over-protective parents slow strength building in kids

Here’s why this is such a problem for some loving parents. If you never let a child test their wings by moving a little further away from mom or dad’s care, then sometimes they end up developing the symptoms of fear, extreme shyness or a social phobia and end up being afraid of moving forward in life. Not all kids will develop psychological or emotional fears because of overprotective parents, but it can be one of several factors that slows down their personal development and inner strength to move forward toward the next stage of life. Yes, we love our kids, but remember, part of that love is to equip them and prepare them to one day leave the nest to literally launch forward, just like a space shuttle launch sequence at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida.

Think about all of the years of planning and thousands of challenges that have to be overcome to create a successful launch into space. Literally everything that takes place for the years leading up to a rocket or orbiter launch date is done to safely and strategically accomplish the goal of getting that rocket into space and to another place. That’s the driving force of those NASA engineers- to get that big bird off the ground at Cape Canaveral and into orbit toward the stars.

There is an incredible line of dialogue in the movie, “Astronaut Farmer” (staring Billy Bob Thornton), where the father-in-law tells his wanna-be astronaut son-in-law, “I really respect you son. Most dad’s can’t get their families to share a meal at the table together and you- you’ve got your whole family dreaming together!” The film tells the story of a dad who reflects the power of never giving up on his life-long dream of orbiting the earth, and more importantly shows the courage, patience and teamwork of a whole family coming together to make an impossible dream become an incredible reality.

Space flight can be a lot like parenting, we spend years getting them ready to have a successful launch because one day we know that we will have to do a launch sequence to countdown the days as they head out to another stage of life. This is the way that God designed it- kids are supposed to move out and move on to build lives of their own. If overprotective parents stall that process, it scrubs the launch and leaves the child stranded on the launch pad, while their peers are blasting off toward early success in life. No one wins and it often sets the child up for tremendous problems that could have been solved if the parents had taken a different and more directive approach.

5…4…3…2…1… Blast off- or blow up?

When kids are well equipped to launch into early success during their young adult years they soar and it’s a joy to watch. If you have ever seen a launch up close from Cape Canaveral at the Kennedy Space Center you know what I mean- words can hardly describe the power and the sheer excitement of knowing that not even gravity can stop that rocket from what it was designed to do- blast off toward the stars! However, when what I’ve been referring to as the parenting ‘launch sequence’ is interrupted by well meaning, (or sometimes fearful) parents they often blow up, because the kids crash in some way. Sadly, these days it seems there are more crashes than successful launches. (And you are probably thinking about someone you know stuck in this painful process right now).

So what to do? Here are some parenting tips to coach you through the process of parenting strategies through every stage of childhood to build strong kids now, so they can one day go out and build successful lives as adults. That’s a parent’s job, to give them the roots of belief and then equip them with the wings of healthy resources to fly.

When this process happens, a child grows through each stage of life with a better experience and then grows stronger from the momentum of moving forward in a powerful way because they were set up to win by parents who weren’t afraid to point them toward the stars and launch into the life that God designed for them to live.

Parenting Stages necessary to build strong kids:

Here are some of the key developmental stages and strategies to guide you toward a successful launch with your child.

Birth to puberty, (ages 0-12)-

Kids need a ‘Caretaker’ who can teach and help with daily tasks while the child gradually is learning these skills from their parent through positive role modeling, especially in the important areas of self-discipline and responsibility. Other ways for a child to grow in confidence and strength during these years is to help them find social connection and friends through school activities, church groups, youth sports or scouting. This higher level of involvement also connects kids with other healthy adults who can help kids learn even more because of teachers, coaches, and pastors who are investing into their young lives as they grow to the next level of maturity and future success.

Puberty to College Years, (12-21)-

The parenting strategy to use during the teen years is a combination of part Counselor and part Coach to help guide through the emotional issues of building relationships and dealing with hurt feelings; while balancing the tasks of learning to deal with difficulties in life and making wise educational or career choices. Psychologist John Trent calls this process ‘soft love mixed with hard love’, (For more on this concept of parenting, check out “The Two Sides of Love” published by Focus on the Family Publishing, 1999)

College years to Adulthood, (21-30)-

I believe that we always need our parents- it’s just that the need changes as we grow older. Little kids need a parent to help with personal hygiene, teens need their parents to help them develop healthy habits and by this stage young adults need honest advice and direction. These years are a great time for the parent/adult-child relationship to prosper since the young adult is out on their own dealing with life, yet still needs a ‘Consultant’ to bounce ideas off of as their build a life independent of their parents to firmly establish a life of their own.

I want you to know that millions of other parents have successfully launched their child from birth toward adulthood and you can too. There is a sign in the launch control room of the Kennedy Space Center that says it well, listen… “It takes a team- to launch a dream.”

Know that you are not alone in this process. There are hundreds of resources available at our website as well as links to dozens of other groups that are driven by the desire to help you experience the great joy of watching a dream take flight, as well as provide the tools and training to help you if you’ve already crashed to get past the nightmare and not be afraid to dream again about what your son or daughter could be when they launch into a life of their own.

Max Manila 2.5 Goes 2.6

Max Manila 2.5 has been a famous application developed by the XDA-developer Maxycy. This versatile HTC Sense application lets you do a lot of things unlike others that you can find circulating in the internet world. Now, Maxycy has developed a 2.6 upgrade for Max Manila 2.5. Although this is still in beta mode, this has a lot of new functions that’s going to be great for you and for your phone.

You are now able to use different clock types with just a tap on the screen. You can also turn your interface to full screen mode and much more.

The Max Manila 2.6 project has a lot of hidden shortcut that few users know.

By tapping the top-center part of the screen where your carrier bar is seen, you’re going to see a total of 8 different choices on clock layouts.

While in full screen mode, tapping the top-left portion of the bar will open the start menu. Tapping the top right part will show the battery monitor.

In disabled full screen mode, tapping the top left will lead you to the contacts tab while tapping the bottom right part will lead you to the setting tab.

When you swipe left or right, you’ll see that the Max Manila setting is going to show up. This allows you to change icons with a simple tap on each.

The new Max Manila 2.6 Icons and its Features

Mute: Off, Silent and Vibrate mode

Resolution: VGA (VGA is not yet ready) or WVGA

Alert: You have a setting for notifications and shortcuts. You have a total of four combinations (off, only notifications, only shortcuts and both notification and shortcuts)

Titanium: You can switch to Titanium interface on WM 6.5

Lite: switching to Lite mode.

Calendar: Appointments and call history are displayed.

Goldfish: Goldfish program is enabled by selecting this

Auto Lock: You can enable or disable auto locking while phone is upside down

Slider: You can turn on or off the transparent effect of the slider

Tab Icons: You can turn the retractable sliders on or off (works only for normal screen)

Rotate: The screen will rotate (not implemented yet)

Wallpaper: You can switch from default wallpaper, full screen and background for all (bg4all)

Weather: You can toggle the weather animation on or off.

The new Max Manila 2.6 is still in beta so there are still glitches in this system. I advise you to be careful in using it.

Crow’s Feet and How to Stop Them

Looking a little tired around your eyes lately and confused by the hype how to remedy those lines and wrinkles?

There are cosmetic companies touting products just hoping you will believe that crow’s feet can be diminished just by rubbing a little pad around the eyes. And, some cosmetic companies would like you to spend a small fortune every month on a topical preparation filled with peptides and other substances to stop the smile movements that cause creasing.

Maybe you have considered more drastic measures like Botox or fillers to combat the look of old because you know that wrinkles shout to the world that you are not the fresh-faced beauty you once were.

Such silliness!

Crow’s feet are caused when the forehead muscle, a large vertical muscle, begins to elongate and push downward into other muscle groups that surround the eyes. Couple this downward motion with smiling, squinting and other facial expressions and voila! You have lines and wrinkles in a very delicate area of the face.

Yes, while skin care is important, in most cases you will never need to go the route of surgery or injections that paralyze and plump to correct crow’s feet. Treating crow’s feet using extraneous methods such as laser and Thermage seems barbaric, potentially dangerous and useless because these methods do not stop the cause of Crow’s feet; these modalities only temporarily mask the symptoms.

You can prove this to yourself when you choose facial exercise to look younger and prettier. In one movement you can increase the distance between your eye brows and eye lashes; you will also experience the amazement that when you perform this exercise your forehead lifts and tightens, too.

Exercise changes everything because it revitalizes your body and it can revitalize your facial features. Oxygenated blood can be forced to our tissues when we use isometric and resistance movements; this action plumps up the tissue and rejuvenates the muscles so they better support your skin.

Just so that you know, there are other facial exercises to combat an aging face so that your face is firmer and lifted without using anything but your age erasers – your thumbs and fingers – to create a younger looking, prettier face.

Rather than sitting in a physicians office for twenty minutes to two hours wasting time and spending money to have a treatment, you can self treat at home using just thirty-five seconds each day to stop your droopy forehead from creating unwanted lines, wrinkles and crinkles around your eyes. The benefits of facial exercise for this area are truly amazing because you will see and feel a substantial difference the first day you try the exercise.

Will you look like you’re sixteen again? Probably not but if you want to stop the downward slide of your forehead without spending a fortune or putting yourself at risk, this is the ticket for which you have been searching.

It is important to note that once you begin exercising your upper eye and forehead muscles that you continue to do so once a day for six days in a row. Even though the time allowance seems slight, it is sufficient to lift that heavy, vertical muscle to alleviate the look of old.

Women even into their 80′s have seen their crow’s feet greatly diminish. Couple the forehead exercise with the one hundred circle exercise to reduce the lines and wrinkles caused by smiling and other facial expressions and you will begin to see that twinkle return to your eyes.

You may be scoffing at the thought of alleviating crow’s feet without expensive interventions but I promise, you’ll have the last laugh when you realize just how powerful facial exercise is to save your face.

Once the decompression of the forehead muscle is reversed, you can see that the area surrounding the eye acts differently. The area becomes lifted and tightened. Without anything invasive, pain, risk or expense, you can correct droopy facial features with simple, easy to perform movements that require only minutes a day to complete.

How long does it take to see results? Most everyone sees results the very first time the movements are performed; however, lasting results come at about three weeks into practicing this exercise. The more consistent you are, the better your results.

Capture your results on film or in a digital format; do this by taking close-up photos of your face before you begin. At the end of the third week, take another set of photos and see how the area has lifted and responded to this very special exercise.

Once you prove to prove to yourself that you don’t need any special interventions to have a younger, prettier face, you might want to consider learning an isometric and resistance facial exercise program that will help you rediscover the face you thought you had lost forever.

What do you have to lose? Only the look of old!

Concert Ticket Brokers Make Easy Work of Finding Premium Concert Tickets

When you want to find tickets for concerts that are coming to a major city where you live or will be visiting, the easiest way to do so is to find concert ticket brokers online. Concert ticket brokers can find the tickets you want, even sold out concert tickets, saving you the time and trouble of having to locate them yourself.

It is easy to search concert tickets on your concert ticket broker’s website. You can click on links for a particular city, and then find the musical groups or singers listed alphabetically. This makes it very easy to search concert tickets, focusing on your favorite groups and singers. You can also search concert tickets for your favorite group’s performance schedule in your city or any major city in the United States, so you can attend an event that best fits into your busy schedule.

If someone buys tickets for a particular concert, and then cannot attend the event at the last minute, concert ticket brokers may purchase these tickets and add them to their websites. This may be the case when sold out concert tickets become available. This is beneficial if you decide on short notice that you would like to see a particular group or singer, because sold out concert tickets may be purchased in this manner.

There are a huge variety of tickets for concerts currently available. Enjoy classic singers like Elton John, who is playing at Wrigley Field in Chicago on July 16th. Take in a rockin’ Billy Joel concert at the Nationwide Arena in Columbus, Ohio on July 14th. Taylor Swift is playing at the Greensboro Coliseum in North Carolina on June 12th. Catch the Jonas Brothers at the Pepsi Center in Denver, Colorado on June 24th. Earth, Wind and Fire, along with Chicago, light up the stage at the Rose Garden Arena in Portland, Oregon on July 18th. These performers, and so many others, can be seen very soon if you get tickets for concerts now from your online ticket broker.

Superior concert ticket brokers offer several satisfaction guarantees. You will want to utilize ticket brokerage services that utilize secure encryption on their websites. Also look for ticket brokers that offer real tickets that will arrive in time for you to use them. It sounds obvious, but sometimes unscrupulous ticket sellers do not follow through properly on ticket orders, so you will only want to purchase from reputable sources. If a concert is canceled, you will want your ticket broker to refund the ticket price if the event is not rescheduled. Finally, there should be no hidden fees, so that the price you see listed is the one you will actually get.

With these quality guarantees in place, you can shop with confidence for tickets for concerts from your online ticket broker.

Ernie Kovacs: Television’s Pioneer Of Visual Innovation And Comic Surrealism

Ernie Kovacs was television’s most original visual innovator and surreal comic genius, who made us see the world in a different way. He was a true artistic pioneer, who created his unique magic when the medium was just in its infancy.

The pictures that Kovacs conjured along the way, have had an enormous influence on a variety of television shows, as well as individual performers and writers who followed. These included: “Rowan and Martin’s Laugh-In,” “Monty Python’s Flying Circus,” and “Saturday Night Live,” to name just a few. In addition, performers and writers, such as Steve Allen, Johnny Carson, David Letterman, Chevy Chase, and Mel Brooks, all owe a great deal to this inspiring and creative free spirit.

In 1986, the Museum of Television and Radio (now the Paley Center for Media) presented an exhibit of Kovacs’s work, called “The Vision of Ernie Kovacs.” In the Museum’s booklet for the show, the Pulitzer Prize winning television critic, William Henry III wrote:

“Kovacs was more than another wide-eyed, self-ingratiating clown. He was television’s first significant video artist. He was its first surrealist…its most daring and imaginative writer. He was television’s first and possibly only auteur, and he was a genius… Kovacs’s genius lay in the realm of art. There, a genius is someone who causes an audience to look at the world in a new way.”

MEETING ERNIE KOVACS

In 1953, I first encountered Ernie Kovacs when I was 12 years old. Ernie’s early morning television show, “Kovacs Unlimited,” was being aired on network television in New York City on WCBS (channel 2). It was on this show that I first saw many of the visual sight gags, surreal illusions and characters that became an essential part of his astonishing and original vision. But as a 12-year-old kid, I just thought the show was very exciting, lots of fun and really cool!

As an avid fan of the show, I, immediately, joined Ernie’s Early Eyeball Fraternity and Marching Society (EEFMS) and, officially, became an EEFMS member. For years, I proudly carried my EEFMS membership card around in my wallet, and when called upon, would sing the EEFMS song, while saluting (left index finger extended, and held over left closed eye):

“Hail to thee, oh EEFMS members, thee so brave and strong,
Through hot Julys and cold Decembers, sing our EEFMS song.
EEFMS, oh EEFMS, EEFMS, oh EEFMS,
We say this now with no misgiving,
If you’re not EEFMS, you’re not living!”

Then on one spring day in 1953, my good friend Arnie Eastman and I decided to “crash” Ernie Kovacs’s studio at WCBS. Armed with our EEFMS membership cards, and the password: “It’s been real!,” we worked our way past the downstairs entrance guard and arrived, by elevator, at his studio floor. After we knocked on Kovacs’s studio door, we were greeted by a member of his staff, who told us to go away. But my friend, Arnie, who was very persistent continued to beg this staff member to let us in. Suddenly, we heard a voice from within the studio: “what’s the problem, Andy?” Then Ernie Kovacs came to the door, and after we explained that we were huge fans, and EEFMS members, he invited us into the studio, and seated us in two director’s chairs, right in front of the set! (wow!)

The set was comprised of a long table pitched on an angle, with the television camera bolted to the floor at the same angle. So when we viewed the television monitor, the table appeared to be in its normal horizontal position, not on an angle.

Then, one of Kovacs’s characters came out on the set carrying his lunchbox, and sat down at the tilted table. At the other end of the table sat another man reading his newspaper. Then each time the man with the lunchbox took an item out of his lunchbox and attempted to place it on the table, it would either slide or roll down the table into the lap of the man reading his newspaper. The finale of this sight gag came when the man with the lunchbox took out his thermos bottle, and attempted to pour some milk into his glass (which had been previously secured to the tabletop before the sketch began). The stream of milk moved at a bizarre angle, nearly parallel to the tabletop, completely missing the glass!

It was this classic sight gag stunt, and numerous other surreal effects, that shocked and delighted television audiences, and, ultimately, became a part of his renowned visual effects vocabulary.

After we stayed through the entire rehearsal of the show, Ernie Kovacs invited Arnie and me to join him for lunch! During lunch he regaled us with delightful anecdotes, as Arnie and I sat there hanging on his every word. Then after lunch, he asked us if we would like to see his office! – Arnie and I could hardly believe our good fortune, here we were, two unknown 12-year-old kids who Mr. Kovacs had never met before, and yet we were spending the day with Ernie Kovacs! (WOW!)

So after lunch, he took Arnie and me over to his office on West 57th Street, and he spent the afternoon with us, telling us fascinating stories, and showing us around his suite of offices. – Our favorite memory of the day was seeing the wild and wonderful collection of tribal artifacts, which Ernie had hanging and standing all around his private office – and the coolest thing of all was the border-cornice of shrunken heads surrounding the entire room!

THE EARLY YEARS and FINDING HIS PLACE

Ernest Edward Kovacs was born on January 23rd, 1919 in Trenton, New Jersey. He died in a car accident, just before his 43rd birthday, on January 13th, 1962.

Ernie Kovacs’ father, Andrew, emigrated to the United States from Hungary at the age of 13. After working at several jobs, unsuccessfully, during Prohibition Andrew became a very successful bootlegger, which enabled him to move his wife, Mary and their sons, Tom and Ernie, into a 20 room mansion, in a fashionable section of Trenton. But with the exception of this period during Prohibition, the family continued to live in humble surroundings.

Ernie’s interest in theater began in high school. At Trenton Central High School, Ernie came under the influence of his great mentor, drama teacher, Harold Van Kirk. Ernie received a scholarship to the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in 1937, with the assistance of Mr. Van Kirk. While working in Vermont in summer stock in 1939, Ernie became seriously ill with pneumonia and pleurisy, and spent the next year and a half in very serious condition in several hospitals.

It was during this time that his comedic talent began to show, as he enthralled the nurses, doctors and patients with his antics. (The doctors did not think that he would live). In addition, while in the hospital, Ernie developed a lifelong love and appreciation of classical music, and he kept his radio constantly tuned to WQXR, the classical music station, in New York City. In years to come, Kovacs would frequently use classical music in many of his sketches.

In 1941, Ernie found his first paid job in entertainment work as a disc jockey, at Trenton’s WTTM radio. He spent the next nine years with WTTM, becoming the station’s Director of Special Events. During this period, Kovacs experimented with a variety of “live” zany events, such as seeing what it would be like to be run over by a train (leaving the tracks at the last second), to broadcasting from the cockpit of an airplane (for which he took flying lessons).

During this period, Ernie was also involved in a local theater group, the Trenton Players Guild, in early 1941, doing some directing for the group. In June, 1945, the Trentonian, a local weekly newspaper, offered Kovacs a column, which he called “Kovacs Unlimited,” in which he found his voice as the local wag.

Ernie married his first wife, Betty Wilcox, on August 13, 1945. They had two daughters together, Elisabeth (Bette) and Kip Raleigh (Kippie). The marriage was an unhappy one, and they finally divorced on February 11, 1954. When the marriage ended, Ernie was awarded full custody of their two daughters, based on the court’s decision that his former wife was mentally unstable. In that same year Ernie married Edith (Edie) Adams on September 12, 1954.

In 1950, Kovacs had his first opportunity to break into television. He showed up at his audition at NBC’s Philadelphia affiliate, WPTZ (now KYW-TV) wearing a barrel and shorts, and got the job! Ernie’s first assignment was a show called “Pick Your Ideal,” a fashion and promotional show for the Ideal Manufacturing Company. Before long, he was also the host of “Deadline For Dinner,” which was a show where local chefs shared cooking tips and tricks. One night the guest chef did not show up, so Ernie was called into action to ad-lib at the 11th hour, and improvised his own recipe for Eggs Scavok (Kovacs spelled backwards).

Soon after, Ernie hosted and, ultimately, created a unique format for the groundbreaking show, “Three To Get Ready”(TTGR). This was the first regularly scheduled early morning show (7 to 9 AM) in a major TV market. Prior to this, it had been assumed that no one would watch TV at such an early hour. Although the show was billed as early morning news and weather, Ernie provided this, along with his own zany and original approach. When rain was in the weather forecast, Kovacs would stand on a high platform, and sprinkle water over the person reporting the weather forecast. On one occasion goats were auditioned for a local theater performance.

It was on the TTGR show that Ernie began to develop his ad-libbed, experimental style that would become his reputation. Among his many innovations early on, Kovacs allowed the so-called fourth wall to be breached, going beyond the boundaries of the show set to expose the behind-the-scenes action, at once shocking and fascinating the viewing audience, who had never seen anything like this before, as he went from interacting with the TV camera crew, to taking a tour of the control room, and chatting with the technicians. And then sometimes he went outside of the studio. He once, spontaneously, decided to wear a gorilla costume, and ran through a downtown Philadelphia restaurant.

When Ernie could no longer put up with his scant prop budget of $15 a week for the show, he solved the problem by asking his TV viewers to send anything that they no longer wanted, to channel 3, WPTZ. On that same day, the entire studio lobby was full of all the discarded stuff that his viewers had sent!

It was on this show that Kovacs found his milieu. Ironically, the failure of the highly rated show, “Kovacs on the Corner,” contributed to finding his place. He was gradually discovering that his true milieu was the television studio space, unencumbered by cutesy street sets, with crooked barber shop polls (the setting for “Kovacs on the Corner,” where there were too many creative collaborators). In the undecorated studio, he could give free rein to the flow of ideas, contrasting surreal mixtures of the commonplace and the unusual, which only he could visualize – he had to be in control.

As much as Ernie wanted to be in control of “the vision,” he relied heavily on his savvy crew, comprised of his special effects technicians, set designers, musical staff, cameramen, soundmen and others, many of whom had worked with him since the beginning, and knew his moods, idiosyncrasies and rhythms so well, that they were able to anticipate and improvise at a moment’s notice – sometimes inspiring, or even saving a sketch that was in trouble.

The process of creating new shows with a unique approach and original material, working with minimal scripts and very little rehearsal time, in a “live” television format of that period (there was no videotape, so you were performing without a net), was always a daunting prospect. By their very nature, the shows were experimental. Ernie set no limits for himself, constantly improvising and taking chances. Sometimes the results were brilliant and very funny, and at other times they were just inane and boring. From Ernie’s perspective everything was fun – success or failure – he was just a big kid, and the crew were his playmates.

But in the conventional world of television producers, and unsophisticated audiences, where high ratings were the badge of success, Ernie Kovacs was swimming against the tide, which was inevitable for such an innovative visionary.

Throughout his television career Ernie Kovacs always had a large cult following of avid viewers, and received constant praise from the critics. But, ironically, and perhaps, because of his inventive and experimental style, he was never able to consistently sustain the interest of the larger television audience, who had been conditioned by conventional sitcoms and vaudeville style variety shows.

CHARACTERS and SIGHT GAGS

As the incorrigible prankster, Kovacs also encouraged his crew to follow suit and improvise, and take chances. So on at least one occasion, the crew turned the tables on Ernie. On that day, Kovacs appeared as the inept magician, Matzoh Hepplewhite. The sketch called for Hepplewhite to hit a gong frequently. This was the signal for a sexy female assistant to appear with a tray with a bottle of liquor and a shot glass. Ernie (Hepplewhite) was supposed to take a snort, which was supposed to be tea. But the stagehands substituted real liquor instead of the tea. When Ernie took the snort of liquor, the expression on his face was priceless: realizing, of course, that every time he rang the gong he would have to drink another shot of real liquor! Since it was”live”television he had to continue on with the sketch. So at the end of the show, Ernie staggered off the set completely drunk.

As the madcap performer that he was, Ernie played a variety of roles, many of whom became recurring characters. These included the silent Chaplinesque, Eugene, who was the character who poured milk from his thermos bottle that never reached the glass on that tilted table. Ernie was also one of the three derby-hatted apes, known as the Nairobi Trio, who performed their mechanical antics to the tune of Robert Maxwell’s “Solfeggio.” They were regulars on the early morning show, “Kovacs Unlimited.”

One of my favorite characters was the effete poet laureate, Percy Dovetonsils, also portrayed by Kovacs, who spoke with a lisp, and often recited poetry, in between sips of his dry martini (once a stagehand slipped a goldfish into his glass, just as he was going on “live,” on the air).

In addition to the many characters that Ernie portrayed, there were many elaborate sight gags that he would perform that, often, only lasted a few seconds. One of my favorites is an underwater stunt, with Ernie playing himself, as the inveterate cigar smoker. In the sketch, Ernie is actually underwater, sitting in his easy chair with a cigar in his mouth, reading his newspaper. He then removes the cigar from his mouth and exhales a puff of white smoke! (The trick is that the “smoke” was actually a small amount of milk, which he filled his mouth with before going underwater).

KOVACS’S VISION and TECHNOLOGY

In the pioneer days when television was in its infancy – early 1940s into the 1950s – radio was still the reigning medium. As a result, the thinking about television as a medium, was very conventional. Directors of television productions would only use special effects, such as cuts or fades or dissolves, similar to the techniques commonly used in the movies at that time. The more sophisticated visual techniques that were available, such as super imposition (one image from one TV camera placed over a second image from another TV camera) was rarely used except in the most conventional way. Similarly, reverse polarity (throw a switch and turn positives into negatives), and reverse scanning (where images could be flipped upside down) were not used because early television generally stuck to realism. Most television productions at that time resembled filmed theater or vaudeville. Directors would just set up a stationary TV camera and let it run.

In the ongoing discussion of Ernie Kovacs’s unique form of visual comedy, much has been made of the technical wizardry involved, and the fact that he was ahead of his time. It is true that Kovacs was enthralled with these new electronic toys that had never been used before. He and his crew freely experimented with the technology, and realized that these techniques offered great possibilities. But, what was most important was determining what they would be used for. So the technology played a part, but the process always began, first, with Ernie visualizing a particular scene in his mind. According to the writer, Mike Marmer, who eventually worked for Kovacs:

“Ernie really saw pictures more than anything else. I don’t know where they came from, or why – they were just bizarre – but the point is, that that’s what he saw. He saw the shock of something.”

So for example: let’s say that Ernie had an idea for a sketch. He first saw a picture of a man (character) who sees a sign that says: “fly man wanted.” Then, Ernie saw a picture of the man walking upside down into the studio. Finally, the technology followed: by using the reverse scan function, the image of the man is flipped upside down, and “the vision” was complete.

FINALLY – RECOGNITION

Recognition of Ernie Kovacs’s artistic achievements has been woefully slow in coming. It was not until nearly 25 years after his death, that he began to receive the recognition that he deserved.

As I mentioned in greater detail at the beginning of this article, in 1986, the Museum of Television and Radio (now the Paley Center for Media) mounted a four-months long series “The Vision of Ernie Kovacs,” which showcased the diversity of his work. In 1987, Ernie Kovacs was inducted into the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences’s Hall of Fame. In 1989, on the occasion of television’s 50th anniversary, in a special issue of New York Magazine, Ernie Kovacs was named one of the medium’s top 25 stars of all time.

In the closing remarks in her wonderful book, “Kovacsland: a Biography of Ernie Kovacs,” Diana Rico wrote:

“The recognition is well-earned and long overdue. In his lifetime, despite a loyal contingency of fans and a supportive critical establishment, Ernie’s insistence on swimming against the mainstream tide prevented him from achieving the high prime time ratings that are regarded as the badge of success in network TV. But the same qualities that kept him from reaching the high numbers were what made him a special talent -the endlessly curious intellect, the love of experimentation, the boundless imagination, the subversive and surreal wit. Ernie Kovacs loved nothing more than to create his bizarre visions for the world to enjoy. We are fortunate that for a dozen years at the beginning of the most important medium of our time, he was able to do just that.”

The Benefits of 100Hz Or 200Hz LCD Or Plasma Television

How 100Hz originally worked

A standard PAL television will refresh the picture 50 times per second or at a frequency of 50Hz. The Frames Per Second (FPS) are the quantity of frames needed to create the illusion of motion. Our eyes are often aware of this frequency depending on the speed of the image, the intensity of darkness, and the intensity of brightness accordingly you will on occasion notice the picture flicker on a 50Hz Television. Moreover the bigger the screen is the more apparent the flicker is.

At 100 FPS (100Hz) TV operates at twice the Frames Per Second by creating a duplicate of every frame and inserting it after the previous one. On a 50 FPS (50Hz) Cathode Ray Television (CRT) because the picture is created by an charged particle scan there is a visible flicker that can be seen by the human eye. As a result of doubling the scan frequency to 100FPS and inserting a copy frame this problem is not apparent as far as the human eye is concerned. The result of this is to appreciably reduce the flicker.

The benefit of 100Hz on Plasma and LCD TV’s

Plasma and LCD televisions don’t have flickering because they don’t generate the picture with an electron scan. However LCD and Plasma TVs still gain from 100 Herts because advanced digital circuitry creates an further frame or middle image. The Television does this by creating an further frame by means of complicated interpolation, as well as motion compensation calculations to calculate what the addition fields and frames look like, instead of inserting a copy frame. (e.g. the first and second frames are different).

Nevertheless even at 100Hz the picture still does not produce a completely smooth picture especially with fast motion images. Several television manufactures attempt to reduce this further by using digital picture processing. Typically there is still a little blurring on quick moving images although the advantages are clearer and better-defined surfaces, smoother movement, and sharper pictures than is possible from 50 Frames Per Second LCD TVs and PlasmaTVs.

For example if a football moves ten pixels from left to right between frames one, two and three, the 100Hz television will digitally make two added frames between one and two, along with two and three, in which the ball will move five pixels. This results in five frames in which the football moves a total of ten pixels i.e. the initial frames one, two and three plus the digitally created frames inserted between one and two, and in between two and three. The effect of this is that the eye sees an image that moves more smoothly than previously.

The advantage is that 100Hz televisions have a clear benefit of ending the majority ghosting effects now and then seen in LCD TVs. The ghosting effect caused by the subsequent image being displayed before the preceding one has faded away.

Most top manufacturers have got 100Hz Plasma and LCD televisions including JVC, Panasonic, Toshiba, Samsung, LG, Sony, Philips,Hitachi and Pioneer.

Further advantages with 200Hz

A range of 200 hertz televisions have been produced by Sony which digitally inserts three additional frames in between the original 50Hz frames. Thus rapidly moving scenes are seen with a smoother, more fluid and sharper picture than 50Hz or even 100 hertz televisions.

Benefits for people who have photosensitive epilepsy

Research has shown that 100Hz TV’s can assist in preventing seizures in people who suffer with photosensitive epilepsies when viewing television or playing computer games.

Million Dollar Ideas – 5 Simple Products That Made Millions

Have you ever watched television and an As Seen On TV infomercial or commercial popped up with something for $19.95 or $9.95? Of course you have. Did the commercial make you think that the product was the dumbest thing that you had ever seen? Did it then occur to you that someone would probably make millions of dollars from that one product?

I know that I have. One extra stupid commercial for the Bacon Wave got me thinking about some more dumb things that made people rich. I couldn’t resist putting together my own list of 5 dumb ideas that made people extra rich. Enjoy.

  1. The Blanket With Sleeves I have to start with the Snuggie. It’s a cheap, polyester blanket with sleeves worn backwards, that also has the effect of making you look like an extra in a B-movie cult film. The best part is that while the Snuggie might be popular, they copied the idea from a small business owner. We might laugh at the commercials (have you seen the Macarena one?) but the company is laughing all the way to the bank with something like 4-5 million sold. That’s at a price of $19.95 plus shipping and handling. Personally, I think they ripped off Yoda. Let’s not leave your pets out, because there’s a Snuggie for dogs too.
  2. Billy Bob Teeth Halloween is coming and costume stores will be popping up. You might have used Billy Bob Teeth to complete your costume without realizing it. This company makes teeth overlays to make it appear as if you have (usually) bad teeth. I want to slap myself every time I see these things because I know that they probably cost 50 cents to make in China but they sell here start at $9.99 here. Someone is wearing those fake teeth all the way to the cashier window, and it’s not me.
  3. The Pottery That Grows Ch-ch-ch-chia! You’ve seen the commercials. You spread some seeds on the outside of a figure (President Obama head anyone) or sprinkle them in a small pot, water it, and then it magically grows! Chia seeds are actually edible (maybe not the ones that come with your “pet”) and are high in Omega-3 fatty acids. You can find the seeds or chia flour at your local health food stores. A chia pet is about $17.99 at your local drug store. A pound of high quality organic chia seeds is around $15 retail. You get just a few ounces with your “pet” and they pay wholesale. By the way, those chia seeds will grow on just about any surface. Drop some onto a plate, add water and watch them grow. Man, am I in the wrong business.
  4. Slip ‘n Slide If you were a kid in the last three decades, then you know this one. It’s the Slip ‘n Slide. For those of you that have no clue what this is, it’s a long, thin piece of plastic to which you attach your garden hose. Somewhere in the plastic are little holes that allows water to escape and the plastic to get wet. You’re expected to take a running start and leap onto this wet plastic and slide your way to heaven. Well, not you, but your kid is. Now, I think of myself as a smart person, so I don’t know why I didn’t think of putting down a tarp, greasing or soaping it up to make it slippery, then setting my garden hose on it for hours of fun, but someone else did, and now they’re rich. I’m not mad.
  5. Oxiclean I bet that one surprised you, didn’t it? Do you want to know what’s actually in the stuff? It’s made from sodium percarbonate mixed with a bleaching agent called sodium carbonate (washing soda). And here I thought my dual biology and chemistry degrees wouldn’t come in handy. You’re thinking that this must be some magic chemical? Nope. If you own a pool, sodium percarbonate is the stuff that you drop in there to keep the pool clean. You can get bucket loads of it for cheap. When mixed together and dissolved in water, the two chemical form hydrogen peroxide in water. Yes, good ‘ole hydrogen peroxide that you have in your medicine cabinet and sprinkle on cuts. Hydrogen peroxide acts sort of like a bleach because it is a strong oxidizing substance. You can make your own version of this at home with the following recipe:
    • 1 cup water
    • 1/2 cup baking soda (or washing soda for really bad stains)
    • 1/2 cup hydrogen peroxide
    • You can find washing soda at your local hardware store. Arm & Hammer a brand carried in Home Depot.

Someone is going to disagree with me for some things on my list, but it’s my list! Can you think of some more dumb things that made someone a heck of a lot of money?
